The team worked on their personal descriptions for their Show Me Poster.

Team Meeting February 17 FINISHING THE MODEL

The team studied the Renewable Energy Kit from Lego Education.  They used a hand crank that converted mechanical energy into electrical energy.

They built a wind power generator into their model for backup electricity as needed during a blackout or a storm.

The team worked on putting emergency supplies inside the basement.  They built a table and cots for people who would be rescued into their basement.

February 10 BUILDING THE MODEL

The team built the basement around the sensor, installed the moving door and motor then programmed the door to open when the sensor is triggered.  The team used the WeDo Software and referred to the aligator programming model as the guide.  The code is Play, Wait for, Sensor, Motor on For 5, Motor Power 5, Motor that Way left, Motor Off, Motor Power 5, Motor this way right, Motor Off.

Shyla and Hannah worked on the landscaping for the front of the building.  Jack assisted them with questions and installing it in front of the building.

February 3 Research and Choosing a Model

The Lego teams are supposed to choose something from "before" (preparedness) "during" or "after" a natural disaster scene for their model.

Team Storm Smashers chose an idea from "what to do during" a Hurricane.  They have learned that are supposed to go into a basement for safety.  This team chose to create a door that opens and closes automatically and lets people into the basement for safety.

They started to build the basement.

January 27 Research Hurricane Sandy

THE VIEW OF HURRICANE SANDY FROM A SATELLITE.

"The effects of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey in 2012 were severe, with economic losses to businesses of up to $30 billion. Hurricane Sandy, the most intense storm of the2012 Atlantic hurricane season, formed in the Caribbean Sea north of Panama on October 22, 2012. The strengthening hurricane moved northwards, severely impacting areas of the Greater Antilles. As it curved towards the New England region, the hurricane degenerated into an extratropical cyclone and shortly afterwards the massive storm made landfall on New Jersey on October 29.

Over two million households in the state lost power in the storm, 346,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and 37 people were killed. Storm surge and flooding affected a large swath of the state. Governor Chris Christie said the losses caused by Sandy were "going to be almost incalculable...The devastation on the Jersey Shore is probably going to be the worst we've ever seen."

THE TEAM WATCHED A VIDEO MADE BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ABOUT HURRICANE SANDY.

Brodie taught team members how to build different types of gears on We Do Software.

January 20 Planning the Project

The team worked backwards from the March 8 date and built a schedule to follow for productivity:

1/20 Planning
1/27 Research
2/3 Research
2/10 Building Model
2/17 Finish Model
2/24 Show me Poster and Tshirt design
3/3 Show Me Poster Finalize and Presentation Practice

Eunji and Shyla built an emergency kit out of Legos.

January 13 Natural Disaster Focus Hurricane Sandy

The team chose hurricanes as the Natural Disaster to focus on for this project.

They also chose Hurricane Sandy as the specific hurricane to study.

January 6 NEW YEARS GET TOGETHER

The team met at Ashlie and Daisy's house for a New Years get together.  Shyla is in India for two weeks. The team set out with members from team Lava Waves at Arbor Oaks to raise money for the Red Cross. They sold candy bars for $2.00 each. The team raised $34.00. Thank you to our Arbor Oaks neighbors for supporting our team and our cause. This money will be donated to the Red Cross efforts in Philippines.

Eunji and Maya made presentations about Natural Disasters.

Ashlie and Ammar from team Lava Waves worked together and built the birds using WeDo Software and programmed them.

December 16 Team Christmas Celebration

Maya on team Lava Waves informed her team of 2 natural disasters Thunderstorms - Lightning and Tornadoes. Lava Waves team presented a skit showing what to do before during and after these two kinds of storms. Emma presented the science experiment where she took a rectangular clear container filled with room temperature water and put 2 blue ice cubes in one end and 2 drops of red food coloring in the opposite end. The colors were swirling and forming similar effects to a thunderstorm and tornado.

Each Natural Disaster we are studying has a How to Prepare, What to do during and What to do after. (ready.gov) How to prepare always begins with Emergency Kit and Communication Plan. That is why it was very special to have the Red Cross come and talk about what goes into an emergency kit and why it's important to have a communication plan. The Red Cross also has iPhone smartphone apps that you can load that will provide information to you that is helpful before during or after a natural disaster.

Team project managers Cadie and Ashley met separately to come up with fundraising ideas. They have a box of candy and they will sell it to raise money.
